After Daniel Caesar recently finished off the North American leg of his Freudian Tour, the 22-year-old singer is enjoying some time off to recharge before heading back out across the pond for a set of European performances at the end of January.
Caesar, along with his managers Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett, joined B. Dot and Elliot Wilson for the latest episode on the Rap Radar Podcast, touching on the Canadian artist’s meteoric rise in the R&B scene last year and a multitude of other subjects in and outside music.
As they explained, the Grammy-nominated Caesar sat down with a handful of major record labels once his name began to generate buzz, but ultimately decided to stay independent with thanks to some important curators and basic tech tools.
The Freudian artist recognized how powerful a co-sign from Apple Music’s Carl Chery was in his emergence and explained his interest in keeping his original team intact. He said, “We’ve already brought [my career] this far with absolutely nothing, we made this project in [manager and producer Jordan Evans’] living room. So it’s like, ‘Let’s keep rocking with this and see what happens.'”
Evans took Caesar’s sentiment a step further, claiming independence was always in the plans. He said, “When you decide against going with a record company, you still need those services. You still need distribution, marketing, promotion, all of it. We started making the right partnerships with people and we found that there wasn’t a limit to where we could take it. We got TuneCore and Twitter, that’s all you need.”
