It’s summer time and from the looks of it Damian Lillard is sharpening his vocal flow during the NBA offseason. The Portland Trail Blazers point guard released a new rap track on his SoundCloud page Monday called “Tell Me Why,” making for his third new song in as many weeks.
The song is a collaboration with his childhood friend V.I.P. set to the beat of Jadakiss‘ “Why.” In it, Lillard raps, “Keep it real, why y’all loving me now? / Why they love the Dame Face but ask me why I don’t smile?”
“Tell Me Why” follows last week’s release, “Full Stomach,” and “Soldier in the Game” from the week before. Both those tracks were released on Mondays as well, suggesting this trend might continue on for some time.
“Dame,” as he’s referred to, impressed with his flow earlier this year when he dropped some rhymes on Sway In the Morning. He also originated the popular #4BarFridays series, where participants such as fellow NBA players Paul George, Iman Shumpert, Lebron James, Draymond Green, Harrison Barnes and Stephen Jackson have all pitched in to rap a 15-second, 4-bar verse on Instagram.
“I really like old-school hip-hop,” Lillard told Billboard in October last year. “Most of the time when I hear really new stuff, it’s because somebody else put me on to it. I don’t really go searching for a lot of new stuff, but it’s a lot of up-and-coming artists that are on this soundtrack, so it’ll be good to put on to some new artists, instead of being so tapped into the old-school like I am.”
