Most know the Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter Clinton Sparks for his work behind the scenes, producing for artists like Lady Gaga and Rick Ross, or for his work behind the mic — as the host of the syndicated “My Awesome Radio Show” and as a former music correspondent for E! News. But Sparks is prepping a solo album of his own for 2014, and now he’s sharing a brand new music video for the track “Stay With You Tonight.”
Check out the video below:
Directed by Joe Dietch, the video finds Sparks behind a mask with a gun in hand, attempting to pull off a heist at the expense of his collaborator, Riff Raff. But after spitting his guest verse, the internet legend, aka Jody Highroller (who’s also prepping a new album for 2014) turns the tables, with the help of rapper Lil Debbie, who also guests in the video.
As for the song, Sparks says, “I wanted to make something aggressive because I knew it would be a great contrast to the desperate and vulnerable lyrics I had.” To craft the rock-based groove of “Stay With You Tonight,” Sparks enlisted the help of producer Brian Lee (Owl City, Icona Pop). What resulted was a track that proves a big time hip-hop and pop producer like Sparks also has a thing for the guitar.
After collaborating with Riff on a track for the fourth installment of his “My Awesome Mixtape” series, Sparks invited the rapper to his Los Angeles studio. After Riff Raff wrote and recorded his guest verse in a half hour, the pair got to work on a new cut, titled “A Spike Lee Joint,” which will appear on Riff Raff’s upcoming album “Neon Icon,” due Jan.28 via Diplo’s Mad Decent imprint.
Looking back on the session, Sparks remembers the Texas rapper saying, “I don’t usually do records like this. This is like the first song I stayed on topic of the song cuz it’s too good to just say whatever.”
