Close to two years after the release of her self-titled album, Ciara returns strong.
The singer-songwriter gives fans a first taste of her upcoming sixth studio album with new single “I Bet,” premiered here on The Juice. Listen below:
The slow-tempo Harmony Samuels-produced song — reminiscent of Ciara’s earlier work, such as Goodies‘ “And I” — features Ciara standing up for herself, and telling off an ex-lover for not appreciating her. Background ad-libs are courtesy of Theron Thomas of Rock City, who co-wrote “I Bet” with Ciara.
“I bet you start loving me/ As soon as I start loving someone else/ Somebody better than you/ I bet you start needing me/ As soon as you see me with someone else/ Somebody other than you,” she sings on the hook. “And I know that it hurts/ You know that it hurts your pride/ But you thought the grass was greener on the other side.”
“I imagine this song (‘I Bet’) will be very meaningful for a lot of people. It is much bigger than any one person’s experience,” Ciara tells Billboard.
It’s hard to not wonder if she’s talking about her ex-fiance and the father of her child, Future, when passionately singing of betrayal on “I Bet”: “You acting like you upgraded me, but I upgraded you… You took advantage, I can’t understand it.” There were reports that the couple called off their engagement after claims of Future’s infidelity surfaced.
Ciara has been quietly recording new music and taking care of her beautiful baby boy, Future Zahir Wilburn, born on May 19.
“I am truly fulfilled by this experience of making my new music,” she says. “I was able to create everything I have aspired and hoped for as an artist. It is my favorite album I have made thus far in my career, and so excited begin my new journey. It is a new me. A new attitude.”
