Chris Brown appeared on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning for a lengthy interview, touching on his past struggles with drugs, his relationship with Rihanna, his reconcilation with Drake, and a possible dance-off with Usher. It’s the first time Brown’s sat down on the show. Here’s what we learned:
1. Ebro gave Brown advice after his altercation with Rihanna.
Ebro called him up and told him, “Be a man, accept your responsibility, and keep making great music.”
2. Jail helped the singer realize what he needed to do.
It “makes you mature faster and see what’s really important and what your focus is,” said Brown.
3. Brown struggled with drugs for several years.
“I was off the syrup, the xanax, turning up,” he told Ebro. “I’m not ashamed in talking about it,” Brown added, “’cause a lot of our youth is doing that now… for me, it wasn’t conducive to me… I was doing crazy stuff. I would wake up and ask my homies, ‘So what time we gotta shoot this video?’ And they’d be like, ‘We shot it yesterday.'”
4. Brown would work with Drake again.
The two men recently appeared on Nicki Minaj‘s “Only.” Ebro wondered, “Would you ever do a song with Drake where Drake sang the hook and you rapped a verse?” Brown said he would. “Drake singing is acceptable.”
5. Getting Brown to add a verse to a song is not cheap.
How much is it going to set an artist back? “It depends. Some people I give a homie price to… The most I charge is like $250,000… If the song’s already a hit, then I’ll get on it. But I’m still gonna take some publishing…and if they say they can only give you $30,000, I need 50 percent of the publishing. ‘Cause I’m gonna get on the record, not to toot my own horn… I’ve gotten on records from a new artist and they’ve went No. 1. I will take a percentage of the publishing. If I’m gonna give you a No. 1, I’m gonna capitalize off it as well.”
6. Brown doesn’t feel that he has to prove himself anymore.
“I just gotta be cautious. At the end of the day, I dont know what the future holds, but I know what my focus is. I know that I’m focused on my music, living my life right, doing the right thing… I take situations as they come, I just know how to handle them now… I don’t have to prove myself. I’m comfortable being a singing, dancing, painting, great guy.”
7. He eventually wants kids.
“I need a little Chris Brown so when I can’t dance no more I can teach him.”
8. He respects Usher, but also thinks he can out-dance him.
“I never dis Usher, cause Usher’s Usher. You gotta give him his props. His resume’s crazy. My legs are a little fresher. If you’re gonna make the Michael Jordan reference, I’m gonna be Iverson, when Iverson crossed Jordan. No offense Usher.”
9. He feels like he’s apologized enough about Rihanna.
“Did you ever wanna say, ‘I f—ed up?'” Ebro asked. “Yeah,” Brown replied. “But you can only say it but so many times. and I feel like through the years I’ve said it enough.”
10. Brown and Rihanna have made amends.
“I don’t have animosity about it,” Brown noted. “Obviously I have a remorse about it, and it’s something that’s really serious… as far as the situation, me and her we made amends…at the end of the day I knew that was a mistake that I will never make again.”
11. The bottle-throwing incident with Drake wasn’t a fight.
“At that time I was all about running up on dudes,” the singer said. “That was a stick your chest out contest, that’s all it was. That was who got the biggest account in the room?”
12: Drake’s camp set up a truce between the two artists.
“His camp hit up my management. They’re like, ‘We got this opportunity at the ESPYs, we wanna do a spoof,’ so I was like, ‘cool’… I ain’t got time to be looking over my shoulder… It just don’t look good at the end of the day… so I was just like, ‘Let’s break this whole beef thing, let’s just do something funny, let’s make light of the situation,’ ’cause it just shows growth and maturity.”
13: Brown would never start anything at the the ESPYs.
“That’s too much white money!” the singer declared. “I can’t mess that up.”
