Chris Brown was noticeably absent from Tuesday’s episode of The Daily Show.
The 26-year-old singer, a lightning rod for controversy and criticism since his 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna, was scheduled to appear on the Trevor Noah-hosted series to promote his new album, but Noah sat down with TV personality Nick Cannon instead.
It’s hardly unusual for a last-minute change to occur in a talk show booking, but Brown’s non-appearance came on the heels of a Daily Beast report that Daily Show staffers were split on the choice to give Brown a public forum — even though the piece also suggested that Noah planned to use the interview to talk about domestic abuse issues.
Brown has spoken out about his felony assault conviction several times in the last six years, including a sit-down on Today, and bookers have not been shy about having him on other high-profile series as a musical guest. In the last year alone, he’s performed on The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
A Comedy Central spokesperson said The Daily Show hopes to rebook Brown in the future.
