Childish Gambino has dropped the STN MTN half of his much-anticipated mixtape project, with the Kauai half set to hit iTunes later Thursday (Oct. 2). Listen to the 11-track STN MTN below:
This is the first project from the actor/rapper (real name: Donald Glover) since last year’s Because the Internet, which spawned the Hot 100 single “3005.” Gambino previously released the song “Sober” from the new project, but it looks like the melodic track will end up on Kauai since it’s not included here. STN MTN defiinitely has a raw mixtape sound, complete with unlicensed samples and DJ Drama hollering in the background, so Kauai will likely include the more polished tracks like “Sober.”
“It’s Michael Jackson-esque,” Gambino said about “Sober” at a Grammy event last month. “It’s weird, because I never said that. I mean, we would hear it, but I was like, ‘I can’t say that.’ Like, ‘I did it just like the best performer ever.’ I just wanted to have that feeling. I just don’t think there’s that feeling anymore. … Michael Jackson is just short-term for something that lasts a long time and you care about.”
