On the heels of taking home his first Grammy Award, Donald Glover has a special treat for his day-one fans. In combination with his creative agency Wolf + Rothstein, Gambino will reissue his 2011 mixtape EP. The project will finally be available across all major streaming platforms at midnight (Jan. 31).
Even though Glover is hard at work on what will be his final album under the moniker Childish Gambino, he has partnered with Stem, an inventive distribution platform, for a boatload of surprises slated for 2018. EP‘s re-release is the first of his many collaborations that he will push out later this year.
“Artists should never be in the position where the industry hinders their creative output,” Glover’s manager, Wolf Taylor, exclusively tells Billboard. “Our goal is to give our artists the ability to release content when and where they want. Partnering with Stem has allowed us to maintain our major label resources while providing us with a platform to independently release our special projects.”
Hopefully, more artists follow in the “Redbone” artist’s footsteps in bringing their classic projects to the digital music marketplace. The tuneful EP is a special opportunity for senior fans to reacquaint themselves with why they became a fan of Childish Gambino, as well as allowing newer fans to go back and explore Donald’s ranging artistry on the five-track mixtape seven years later.
Stream EP at midnight.
