Chance the Rapper knows exactly what to “get the man who has everything”: two surprise tracks just before the holidays. The Chicago MC gifted his fans with a pair of freshies on Friday morning (Nov. 30), in the form of the slow-roll R&B jam “The Man Who Has Everything” and the uplifting gospel-y jam “My Own Thing” featuring Joey Purp.
On the holiday-themed “Everything,” Chance mixes thoughts of materialism with more serious concerns, rapping, “Tryna turn confederate flags into confetti strings/ I’m tryna back up my baby mama like Kevin Federline/ Heard they got some nice-ass houses out there in Beverly/ Never leave where I came from/ I just need some stocking and the chimney they could hang from.”
And, sure, he’d like Santa to bring him some stuff, but all he’s really wishing for is for you to “love me forever, that’s all I ask of you.”
Coming in on some bouncy piano chords, “Own Thing” finds Chance just, you know, seeking out his lane without anyone trying to interrupt. “I don’t like to be bothered when I work, work, work, work,” he raps. “Please leave me the fuck alone, new fiancee, that’s my cologne/ Doin’ too much and sayin’ too much, that’s how y’all ass end up alone.”
Chance has a lot on his plate these days. In addition to starring in the Amazon Prime movie Slice, he’s developing a musical feature called Hope at MGM, will be a judge alongside Cardi B and T.I. on the Netflix musical competition show Rhythm + Flow and will be part of the voice cast of the sequel to Trolls.
