Though Chance the Rapper tantalized fans with a cryptic tweet regarding his interest in running for Mayor of Chicago, on Tuesday (Oct 16), he quashed speculation and endorsed activist Amara Eniya.
During a press conference at Chicago’s City Hall, Chance took the opportunity to voice his support for the head of Austin’s Chamber of Conference. “If you’re willing to see what this city could be, you will vote for [Amara],” he said. Besides explaining why Eniya’s views “most align” with his, he also scoffed at the idea of one day running for Mayor. “I probably won’t be ever running for Mayor of this city,” he added during the press conference.
Earlier in the morning, sources told ABC7 political reporter Craig Wall that Eniya had already told friends that the Chicago MC was going to endorse her for the coveted position.
In recent months, Chance has been vocal about his disdain for the city’s current mayor, Rahm Emmanuel. Earlier this year, Chance fired several jabs at Emanuel in his song “I Might Need Security.” “And Rahm, you done, I’m expectin’ resignation/An open investigation on all of these paid vacations for murderers,” he rapped.
In an interview with Genius, Chance elaborated on his decision to thrash Rahm. “It’s important that people know we have a shitty mayor, but I’m sure everybody else has shitty mayors that they need to worry about,” he explained. “I just really hope that he’s not actually gonna run again because it’s over for his ass, yo. It’s over for his ass.”
