Cardi B came under fire after clips of her portraying Coretta Scott King in an upcoming episode of Off the Rip aired Tuesday (Aug. 28) on TMZ. The Real Housewives of the Civil Rights Movement skit upset Dr. Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Bernice later tweeted that the Bronx native had apologized for several quips taking aim at her father’s alleged infidelities.
King said she’s expecting to speak more in-depth with Cardi B following her apology. “Thank you, @iamcardib, for reaching out to me and apologizing for the skit that aired on @TMZ. I look forward to talking with you soon,” she wrote Tuesday afternoon.
The trailer comes as part of Wild ‘N’ Out star Rip Micheals’ new show Off the Rip. Cardi plays the role of MLK’s wife, Coretta Scott King, who is joined on set by Rosa Parks; Jesse Jackson’s wife, Jacqueline Lavina Brown; Malcolm X’s wife, Betty Shabazz; an undercover Ku Klux Klan spy; and someone deemed the “Iggy Azalea of the Civil Rights Movement.” The group exchange digs at the civil rights leader while attempting to plan a rally in his honor.
Bernice described the spoof as “repulsive” and “false” when speaking to TMZ. Watch the clip in full below.
