Cardi B posted a series of heartfelt apologies on Tuesday (Oct. 6) after she received harsh backlash for promoting a virtual fundraiser for Armenia that led to suggestions that she was supporting terrorism. In an Instagram Story post, the rapper reportedly boosted an upcoming event scheduled to air in Southern California this weekend, which led some angry commenters to start the hashtag #cardibsupportsterrorism.
Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been involved in an ethnic and territorial conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, with the ongoing battles killing dozens over the past few weeks. The post from the “WAP” rapper, which has since expired, inspired dozens of tweets lashing out at her support for the fundraiser, leading to Cardi posting a series of apologies.
“How many times I gotta say the same f–king s–t !? For clout ? What f–kin clout I did it for a friend and I woke up getting attacked,” she tweeted along with a video — which does not show her face — in which she explains that she and estranged husband Offset promoted the event because a business advisor suggested they support it. “I didn’t do my research! I’m sorry ! I don’t know wats going on ! I JUST WANT PEACE !i apologize and I’m still getting attack.”
Seemingly upset at the volume of angry tweets and comments, the rapper made it clear in several posts that she had not done her homework and did not mean to offend anyone.
“I woke up people were attacking me, saying I have the wrong information and people from one country’s telling me something and the other people from another country’s telling me something else. I don’t know what’s going on,” Cardi said in the video. “I don’t have family over there, I don’t know much about the history of both the countries. You know what, it wasn’t even in my place and I apologize because it wasn’t in my place to post something, I should have done my research… I just want peace… I love peace. I want everybody to get along. I don’t want people dying.” A spokesperson for Cardi had not returned requests for comment at press time.
