Bryce Vine sat down with Billboard as part of the “You Should Know” video series, discussing how he came up with his stage name, auditioning for The Glee Project and where the inspiration for his song “Drew Barrymore” came from.
The singer and rapper, whose real name is Bryce Ross-Johnson, tells Billboard that he was born in a bathtub in his mother’s one-bedroom New York City apartment and grew up in Los Angeles.
He decided to take on a stage name after a fellow musician suggested the idea because they were collaborating on a song together. The other artist threw out the idea of “Vinyl” due to Bryce’s love of jazz, so he went with “Vine,” planning to change it in the future — but he never did.
Vine also chats about appearing on The Glee Project in 2011, revealing that despite having never watched an episode of Glee prior to auditioning, he decided to send in a video of himself rapping Kanye West’s “Gold Digger,” which eventually landed him a spot on the show.
The musician opens up about his songwriting process, as well, revealing that he doesn’t actually have a standard procedure that he follows. “I wish I could say had like a obvious process,” Vine says. “Sometimes when I’m writing a song, it comes out of nowhere. There’s just a thought in my head. Sometimes I write a voice note. Sometimes it starts with a beat and I have that beat for months and I have no idea what I’m gonna say.”
Speaking of his song “Drew Barrymore,” Vine states, “I went into [that song] just trying to write a song that focused on the inside as much as the out, as far as how a person makes you feel and what’s special about them.”
“And Drew Barrymore was just a good example of that,” he adds. “I had a crush on her when I saw The Wedding Singer and she was this sweet, authentically genuine and funny and sincere kinda girl and I don’t feel like those kind of women get represented in music nearly as often as they should. So I just went into it trying to write a song, a romance song, for those girls.”
