The last thing listeners thought they’d hear on Thursday morning (Feb. 9) when they tuned in to “Sway in the Morning” on SiriusXM’s Shade45 were fresh rhymes from Brady Bunch star Maureen McCormick. After all, when host Sway Calloway asked the woman best known for portraying uptight older sister and terrible football handler Marcia Brady on the beloved 1970s sitcom who her favorite rappers are, her first answer was… roots reggae legends Steel Pulse?
Pressed further, though, McCormick — who came in to promote the Go Red for Women campaign, promoting heart health for women — came up with one other name. “Vanilla Ice… who I just worked with.” Okay, so what did you expect? Sway got it, saying that seemed like the right choice for a Marcia Brady. But pressed to say which contemporary MC McCormick might get down with, Calloway suggested something a bit edgier, say, Gucci Mane.
“It’s a dream of mine to become a rap artist,” McCormick said to Sway’s surprise. “Or to do a rap duet with a rapper.” What came next was the real surprise, though. Sway — a true fan who crooned a bit of the Bunch’s “Time to Change” as McCormick entered the studio — asked the actress if she’d be willing to bust a freshly written rhyme penned by his co-host, rapper/mixologist Heather B.
Given the rap name “The New M&M” by the host, McCormick proceeded to wreck the mic, politely, of course. “My name is Maureen, McCormick the nicest,” she flowed over Dr. Dre’s classic “Nuthin’ But a G Thang” beat. “I got my own hustle, I don’t deal in spices/ I’m reppin’ for love because givin’ back is best/ So tonight I’m at the Hammerstein supporting Little Red Dress.”
“Little red dress! Little Red Dress!” the whole crew chimed in.
