As part of Billboard’s Black History Month celebration, we’ve asked Black artists spanning all genres to compile their own unique playlist exclusive to Billboard’s Spotify account. Each song they’ve chose represents their love for the culture across the diaspora — from childhood favorites to songs that make them feel free. Today (Feb. 28), DJ Premier concludes BHM by sharing his picks.
“I represent struggle music, which is therapy on so many levels of the mind state that I live by,” Preemo relayed to Billboard. “These songs represent that emotion in different colors of the human universe.”
Notorious for digging deep in the crates and chopping up soulful classics, DJ Premier‘s ties to hip-hop run deep in the legendary producer’s veins. The Brooklyn transplant is still hard at work on his craft with well over three decades into the game, where he’s expected to be producing the next De La Soul album alongside Pete Rock, which is slated for 2019.
