Detroit rapper Big Sean’s appearances have been few and far between in 2017, offering up the occasional guest verse. His long awaited return came with a bang last week (Dec. 8) as he released his new project Double or Nothing in collaboration with rap’s most in-demand producer Metro Boomin.
The pair paid a visit to The Tonight Show stage last night (Dec. 11) to perform singles “Who’s Stopping Me” and “Savage Time.”
On “Who’s Stopping Me,” the G.O.O.D. Music M.C. skated over a smooth, laid back Latin-tinged beat intermixed in with Metro Boomin’s high octane percussion and ominous bass lines. “Savage Time” saw Big Sean speed up his bouncy flow, speaking on politics and the incredulous state of his hometown. Metro’s production shifted into high gear, lacing the record with blazing hi-hats and scattered keys; he also assisted on stage, providing ad-libs and backing tracks with a keyboard.
Metro Boomin’s reign atop hip-hop as the most popular beat maker lives on as he continues to collaborate with raps biggest stars at a blistering pace. Sean and Metro have collaborated on tracks before, but the ten track EP was the first in which the duo worked exclusively together.
