Big Sean is back. Sean Don kicked off the rollout toward his fifth studio album with the Hit-Boy-produced “Overtime” on Wednesday (July 24), which premiered as Zane Lowe’s World Record over at Beats 1.
The Detroit native takes the track into a lyrical overdrive once the triumphant beat intensifies just prior to the two-minute mark. “In this hot girl summer, I’m just trying to find a wife/ Visualizing from every island that’s on Hawaii/ With my team on each side, like ha-ha-ha-ha-ha/ With the last laugh like Kawhi,” he rhymes. “Overtime” closes out with a sample of bowling legend Pete Weber’s epic celebration once he claimed victory.
After taking some time away from music to address his mental health, Sean felt that “Overtime” was a return to what made him fall in love with rapping in the first place. “In a sense I just been returning to my roots, bro,” the 31-year-old told Zane Lowe. “I’ve just been getting back to having fun with it. At one point, I felt like it might have started to become like a burden, or like work, but now it’s just fun. It was a time well spent. I never really knew how important it was to take some time for myself and get myself right.”
Plenty of more heat is on the way from Sean. For now, listen to “Overtime” below.
