Big Freedia bounced into the elevated dairy heights over the weekend, joining such superstars as Stephen Colbert, Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia, Phish and Jimmy Fallon as the face of a special Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor. The beloved Vermont treat makers rolled out the one-time-only “Big Freedia’s Bouncing Beignets” exclusively at Republic NOLA on Saturday (July 6), offering up cones and cups of the vanilla ice cream with a bourbon swirl served over beignets.
The proceeds from the sale of the limited-edition flavor were earmarked for several non-profits chosen by the Queen of Bounce, including No Kid Hungry, which helps feed underserved children in New Orleans. “My team and I created our own flavor with a mock Ben & Jerry’s pint and posted it on my Instagram. We tagged Ben & Jerry’s, hoping they would see it. They did and the rest is history,” said Big Freedia in a statement about how the partnership came to be. The flavor was only available at the launch party, according to B&J, though a spokesperson told NOLA.com that the company hopes “the flavor will be available in stores soon.”
“This is so exciting for me!” Big Freedia said at the event according to the B&J site. “Food is my second love (after music), and to create an ice cream flavor of my own was so much fun.”
“The partnership is a very exciting fit,” added Simone Washington, a Louisiana native and the ice cream brand’s social equity manager. “Big Freedia really focuses on inclusion and bringing people together. Plus, she has a long history of giving back to her New Orleans community. Big Freedia shares a lot of the same values as we do — working with her was a no-brainer.”

Freedia also revealed that a new album is on the horizon, giving the crowd at Republic a first listen to the first single, “Chasing Rainbows,” featuring Kesha. “This song is about being a kid and going through the things that I went through and chasing my dreams,” Freedia told the crowd. “And it’s about everybody being able to chase their dreams, no matter who you are, no matter what race, no matter what your gender, no matter who you choose to love, you have to chase your dreams.”
