If it weren’t for daytime television, Danielle Bregoli wouldn’t have become an Internet celebrity overnight. Now a Billboard Music Award-nominated rapper under the moniker Bhad Bhabie, Bregoli — who rose to fame by turning the slurred threat “cash me ousside, how bout dat” into a meme after her rowdy behavior was spotlighted on an episode of Dr. Phil — is on the small screen again with a music video for her latest single “Gucci Flip Flops,” featuring Lil Yachty. The grainy black-and-white visuals paired with retro duds send viewers into a juxtaposed blast to the past.
Upon the first shot in the clip, those watching might think they’re seeing an episode of Leave It to Beaver or the fictional show Pleasantville, from the 1998 movie of the same name. Bregoli is then spotted as the daughter in a classic nuclear family of four gathered around a mid-century TV set. Sure enough, Bregoli’s true modern persona is seen in color on the screen, rapping along with Yachty to the defiantly vain lyrics. The parents are naturally disgusted by the vulgarity at first, whereas near the end of the video, Bregoli’s 1960s alter ego is furious over a surprise celebrity cameo in the form of a well-meaning milkman.
Bregoli is up against Cardi B and Nicki Minaj for the top rap female artist award at this year’s BBMAs. “Gucci Flip Flops” is her seventh single, although no hints of an album have been given.
