Beastie Boys‘ long-awaited memoir has been long in the making — about two years to be exact — but according to Mike D, fans won’t have to wait that much longer. In a new interview with Beats 1’s Matt Wilkinson, Mike D revealed that the book will be published sometime this fall.
“We’re actually going to finish it, and it’s going to come out finally,” he told Wilkinson. “Like many things we embark on, there are many false starts and, honestly, directions we went in that we realized were not the directions we should be going in, but it’s gonna be coming out in the fall of this year.”
In 2013, the Beastie Boys’ Mike D and Ad-Rock inked a publishing deal with Spiegel & Grau — a publishing imprint of the Random House publishing group — and planned to release their memoir in 2015.
“To tell our story, we have to give the cultural history of where we came from. So New York City in the ’80s, you had all these incredible, exciting music, art, film, all that sort of has to converge to be able to explain. We just had the good fortune of being around all of it so I think that’s No. 1,” Mike D explained. “And the other thing is, I think a lot of times when I read a band book or I watch a music documentary, maybe I’m just kind of A.D.D., I get a little bored, but actually I don’t think they do the subject matter justice because it’s kinda surreal what happens in bands’ lives so you kind of have to use all dimensions to kind of tell the story more accurately.”
The rapper admits that they “don’t know what we’re doing,” and confidently declared “it will be unlike any other music book.”
On the music tip, Mike D is set to DJ at the 2018 Firefly Music Festival, headlined by Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and more.
