According to recently resurfaced footage from Beastie Boys‘ 2006 concert film Awesome; I F-ckin’ Shot That, a young Donald Glover was rapping long before he was Childish Gambino.
During a 2004 Beastie Boys concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, 50 fans were given camcorders to record people jamming out in the crowd that would later be compiled into the 2006 concert film Awesome; I F-ckin’ Shot That.
A Reddit user recently shared a brief snippet from the film that shows a young Glover in the crowd rapping and dancing along to the Beastie Boys’ “Three MC’s and One DJ,” which appears on the group’s 1998 Hello Nasty album.
Before he went under a pseudonym in his own rap career, Glover was an NYU student and a huge Beastie Boys fan, staring directly at the camera while rapping along to the lyrics: “Y’all gather ’round to hear my golden voice/ ‘Cause when it’s time to rhyme, you know I get noice.”
