“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the loneliest of em all?” rapper Austin Awake asks in his recent single “About You.”
Following 2017’s More Than Existing, the New York performer is premiering a visual for the track, which will appear on his spring release A Long Way From Home. “About You” finds Austin coming to grips with the end of a small-town relationship and reflecting on some of the good times.
The video initially displays vignettes of a happy love affair: Austin and a love interest sitting by the lake while carving initials into a park bench, at home making breakfast together, and cruising through the city in a convertible.
This is all juxtaposed with the aftermath of the failed union — multiple missed calls from the unfaithful ex, Austin drinking alone to cope and lonely nights. “Girl, I wish you could feel all the ways that I been feeling, all the ways that I’ve been feeling about you,” he raps.
Of the video, Austin — who has amassed a following with his creative YouTube covers and original tracks — said the outcome perfectly matched his vision. “I can tell you I really wanted this video to display what I saw in my mind when I was making the song. The music director [Spudds Mackenzie] did a very good job playing it out,” he told Billboard.
In “About You,” Austin may seem like he wants that old thing back, but his post-relationship success provides a chance to stunt on his “biggest skeptic.” Crediting his undying faith and citing successful checks as a sign that he’s made it, the rapper eventually rises about it all. “Me and my team we really came up from the bottom, baby you could look at me for the proof,” he tells his ex.
