After what has been a tumultuous summer for A$AP Rocky, the Harlem rhymer returned on Monday (Aug. 26) with a trailer titled “Babushka Boy.”
The 57-second long clip begins with a question that reads: “Why does this black boy wear a babushka?” Shortly after, the scene starts with Rocky bobbing his head alongside his fellow inmates inside a prison cell. Then, a bevy of deformed-looking characters appear on-screen questioning Rocky’s penchant for headscarves, with one saying he thinks the rap star wants to look like “a battered housewife.” After being darted with a handful of quips, the “Peso” MC appears and begins tap-dancing on-screen, donning several ties and a headscarf, before walking off-camera.
While the clip doesn’t confirm whether “Babushka Boy” is the title of a new song, album, or both, Rocky previewed a track titled “Babushka” during his Injured Generation Tour earlier this year.
In an interview with GQ last Janurary, he spoke on the inspiration behind the track, explaining how he was looking to cover his face after being hurt. “It was inspired by a situation I had where my face got cut, and I started walking around with a Babushka to cover it. It was about last September,” he said. “It started with a yellow one when I was on Trevor Noah’s show. I actually did a Vogue shoot the day after I got my face slashed.”
Rocky was recently released from Swedish custody early August after being imprisoned for over a month. He was found guilty of assault for an altercation in Stockholm, but did not have to serve jail time.
