A$AP Rocky‘s Testing seems imminent after he tweeted that his highly anticipated album was finished on Sunday night night (May 20) and held a Lab Rat art exhibit in NYC where he unveiled the project’s cover. The 29-year-old continued adding to the hype of the rollout process by gracing the latest Complex cover, which dropped on Monday. The in-depth conversation touched on a multitude of topics surrounding Flacko’s first album since 2015.
The Harlem native couldn’t help but reflect on the fact that this was the first album he’d craft without A$AP Yams by his side. “It wasn’t the same without Yams,” Rocky admits. “But it’s with any legacy that loses a pioneer; you gotta keep going. Yams is a spirit. He’s an energy. He was always about discovering new talent and trying to put new people on. I think that’s what validated him in hip-hop. We miss him. RIP to A$AP Yams. I had to do what Puff had to do when Biggie died, or anybody who loses somebody.”
The A$AP Mob co-founder worked extensively with Kanye West, Tyler, the Creator, Dean Blunt and Hector Delgado to help lay the sonic foundation behind the project. Rocky hints at having “a lot of music” with Yeezy that could appear on each of their forthcoming albums. “Kanye turned the hotel we were staying at into a Yeezy compound,” he explains regarding West’s Berlin studio setup. “[Kanye] was designing sneakers in one suite, making music in one suite, and I was making music in my suite. It was crazy. We shut down the whole hotel.”
The multifaceted creative has high hopes in store for Testing. “I’m tryna go platinum first week. Let’s get it. On some Cardi B shit times 12, you heard,” he brashly quips. Rocky’s third LP is still without a concrete release date but fans should expect it to drop sometime in the very near future.
