Before 2 Chainz became a bonafide rap star, the MC born Tauheed Epps had hoop dreams. After showcasing his offensive prowess on the high school level in College Park, Ga., his old Alabama State University college basketball coach, Clayton Harris, made it his mission to nab the multi-faceted guard.
In an interview with Mid-Major Madness, Harris expressed his admiration for his former player and how impressed he was when he first recruited him during his days at North Clayton High School. “I first saw him play when I was up recruiting one of his teammates named Robert Jackson,” he said. “His skill was unbelievable.”
Coming up, 2 Chainz was a wiry player with superb IQ on both sides of the ball. Because of his versatility, the 6-foot-5 stud was able to play point guard, shooting guard, and small forward. He later received an athletic scholarship and played 35 games for Alabama State.
Even though he only averaged 2.8 points per game during his time with the Hornets, Harris cherished his playing skills. According to him, he even saw a bit of NBA Hall of Famer, George Gervin, in his game.
“I know you’re going to think I’m crazy, but he reminded me of George ‘The Iceman’ Gervin with his body type and the stuff he could do on the floor,” Harris said. “He was real slick.”
