Zayn Malik is definitely up to something — it’s just not quite clear what yet. The singer shared a series of moody, bluesy piano-driven song snippets with his followers Tuesday morning (Feb. 20), which mostly consisted of dark piano chords, ghostly vocals and a visual of piano keys in shifting light.
Malik, who’s been working on his second solo album, has not announced a release date or first single for the follow-up to 2016’s Mind of Mine solo debut. Fans got a taste of new music in September when he dropped the sensual /music/siaSia-assisted “Dusk Till Dawn.” Unlike that smoldering, beat-driven pop ballad, the new teases from Malik have a more melancholy, blues feel to them.
Malik has been recently posting a series of Instas featuring poetry, and was at it again on Monday (Feb. 19) sharing lines including “Fell from clouds/ To please no crowds/ To make one proud/ No need to shout/ That loud/ Ones need to stand out/ Can Cloud one’s doubt/ Arrogance sits beyond/ Confidence.”
The first musical post, captioned “singing,” features footage of piano keys with a far-away-sounding Malik singing unintelligible bluesy lyrics over a slow, spare set of chords.
Part 2 has his vocals rising into a higher range, with a cabaret feel and lyrics such as, “she wants somebody to love/ In the right wayyyy,” which Malik croons urgently.
Part 3, titled “No mic,” opens with a repeat of the phrase “in the right way” over the same sustained piano phrase.
At press time the three videos had racked up more than one million views.
