You might already be familiar with Joanie Wolkoff as the former vocalist of Her Habits. However, the singer-songwriter is currently operating under her surname, Wolkoff, with a debut EP set to arrive this August. On the first taste — the glorious one-off single “Going Back” — the dynamo performer joins forces with Chicago producer/wunderkinds The Hood Internet – a.k.a. Steve Reidell and Aaron Brink. Meeting “over beer and smuggled-in baklava” at a country music night, the trio combined forces to create this banger of a synth-pop summer anthem.
And now, Billboard has the exclusive premiere of the video. Directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Matt Eastman, the clip features all found-footage of primitive ‘80s 3D animation – including robotic dinosaurs, alien landscapes, and – most importantly? — dog wizard robots. Basically, it has everything you could ever ask for compiled into one visual. Watch it here:
Wolkoff describes the track — and The Hood Internet’s production — as rising up from “a bedrock of chill trap beats” to carry your mood “shoulder-high through town, under a rain of synth confetti.” Okay, she’s right.
And the video? “It’s a re-edit of decades-old VHS content. And — notwithstanding the thorny issue of appropriating found footage — it celebrates early CG,” she told Billboard of the retro inspiration. “Once-embryonic notions of virtual reality and the siren song of technology.”
Get lost in this visual masterpiece.
