Capping off 2019 was no easy feat for these artists. They pushed boundaries, blended genres, broke all-time Billboard Hot 100 records and gained incredible streaming numbers.
For starters, Lil Nas X did all of the above this year. The rapper expertly fused hip-hop and country to create the No. 1 banger “Old Town Road” with Nashville vet Billy Ray Cyrus — which rode for a record-breaking 19 weeks atop the Hot 100.
Lizzo and Billie Eilish both secured nominations in the Big Four Grammy categories: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist. Lizzo scored for the deluxe edition of her third studio album Cuz I Love You, while Eilish’s album of the year nod went to her debut LP When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
Post Malone also squeezed in a boatload of accolades this year, from gaining his second Billboard 200 No. 1 album Hollywood’s Bleeding to securing a spot for each of the project’s 17 tracks on the Hot 100.
In the world of Latin pop, Bad Bunny dominated: He leads Billboard‘s year-end Top Latin Artists chart, the year-end Top Latin Artists – Male chart and the year-end Top Latin Albums chart with X100PRE, which spent 34 weeks atop the regularly in-place Top Latin Albums chart. The 25-year-old Latin trap and reggaetón singer was also the only Latin act to make it onto the overall all-genre year-end Top Artists chart by securing the No. 31 spot.
BLACKPINK also ended 2019 on a solid note after wrapping their first North American headlining In Your Area Tour, becoming one of two K-pop groups (along with BTS) to claim multiple spots on the World Digital Songs Sales chart (dated April 27) and scoring 1 billion YouTube views for the music video of their Hot 100 hit “Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du.”
