Across nearly every genre throughout music history, there have been odes to a particular ethereal muse of affection with songs titled “Angel,” either singing praises of a lover or grieving a lost loved one.
On Thursday (Aug. 10) Fifth Harmony offered their contribution to the “Angel” collection with their heavy, hip-hop-based single of the name, which begs the question, which is the best “Angel” to date?
There are many classics sharing the song title — like Aerosmith’s dramatic rock ballad, Madonna’s seductive ‘80s bop, or even Sarah McLachlan’s heart-wrenching “Angel,” which will forever incite a sob-fest as it soundtracks ASPCA advertisements.
More recent songs of the name include Shaggy and Rayvon’s heartfelt dancehall Hot 100-topper, the funky Pharrell jam off 2006’s In My Mind, The Weeknd’s devotional Beauty Behind the Madness closer, and Fifth Harmony’s recent single.
