Swedish duo Vargas & Lagola have debuted their nostalgia-tinted single “Forgot To Be Your Lover” on Thursday (Oct. 10), premiering exclusively with Billboard.
The acoustic guitar-driven track finds the pair waxing poetic over a lost love, while seamlessly blending ‘70s Americana vibes and the native melancholy of their Nordic homeland.
“I forgot to be your lover/ Now I find it hard for my soul to recover/ Take down, take you down with me/ What’s love, what’s love baby if I/ Forgot to be your lover?” they lament, harmonizing over dreamy percussion and churning percussion.
“It’s a story about neglected love,” Vargas & Lagola tell Billboard in a joint emailed statement of the song’s origins. “A reminder of the importance of communication rather than assumptions. And effort to share some wisdom based on [our] own painful experiences.”
Aside from their own music, the songwriting and production duo (born Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare) have crafted hits for the likes of Madonna, Katy Perry, Swedish House Mafia and close friend Avicii, the latter of whom they’re slated to honor at an upcoming tribute concert in Stockholm this December.
