Twitter has always bridged the gap between celebrities and fans with its public access format. Now, the platform has taken it a step further with the new #BehindTheTweets series, announcing Shawn Mendes as the first featured musical artist.
#BehindTheTweets allows celebrities to go on camera and provide further context for some of their most popular, funny or cryptic tweets. The series began with movie stars like Mark Ruffalo, Danai Gurira and Chadwick Boseman explaining some of their own posts, but Mendes is the first musician to take to the platform. In the clip, the Canadian singer responds to tweets where he’s discussed songs he’s written, his thoughts on vampires and more — with one of the posts even dating back to 2011.
First up, Mendes revealed the story behind a tweet from February 2017, where he said a song he wrote “may be the most excited ive ever been about a song actually.” The track in question was “Lost in Japan,” a single from his upcoming self-titled album, out Friday. He also dished on his tweet about performing with John Mayer in Toronto, to which he said he and Camila Cabello were “both pretty shook” according to their Twitter exchange from that moment.
