Sia’s favorite dancer, Maddie Ziegler, paid a visit to The Tonight Show on Tuesday night (Jan. 29) to reminisce about starring in the “Chandelier” video alongside her godmother, Sia, and make a case for “bad dancing.”
Host Jimmy Fallon and Ziegler began by talking about her time on Dance Moms, which is where Sia and the rest of the world initially met the then-eight-year-old dancer. “She watched the show religiously and then she tweeted me and was like, ‘I want you in my music video,’” Ziegler explained about filming “Chandelier,” in which she channeled the singer while joyously dancing through an abandoned apartment. “At the time, I didn’t really know who she was, but then we did the video and I didn’t expect the outcome.”
At first, people didn’t recognize Ziegler, who wore a platinum-blonde bob wig to resemble Sia’s signature hairstyle for the electrifying concept video — but that didn’t last long. “That video changed my life forever, and then now people started recognizing me,” she said.
Almost five years later, with a recurring role in other Sia videos, including 2015’s “Elastic Heart” featuring actor Shia LaBeouf, Ziegler said they keep a close-knit relationship. “She’s, I think, my god mom now,” Ziegler revealed.
When Fallon asked if that’s an official title, Ziegler explained that it is, saying, “The day we met we clicked and we knew that it was a special connection.” The 16-year-old then talked about some encounters she’s had while out and about with the notoriously private singer-songwriter. “We went to a movie theater one time and a girl came up and said, ‘Maddie do you mind if your mom takes the photo,’ and it was her, and she’s like ‘yeah, sure I’ll take it,’” she smiled. “It’s just funny because I will get recognized but she’s on a different level and people just think she’s like my mom — which is hilarious. If only you knew.”
If those stories weren’t enough to prove their tight personal relationship, the teen dancer added that the long white, croquet dress she wore on Tuesday night actually belonged to her godmother Sia. “This is her bridal dress, like her bridal shower dress,” she smiled, as the audience members “awwwed.”
The Pittsburgh native also talked about the third installment of her coming-of-age fiction series, The Callback, which is based on her life. Fallon brought up how the trained dancer likes to switch it up at parties, and instead purposely dances badly. “I’m a teenager so I’m at the point where you kinda start dating and stuff,” she said to Fallon’s good-natured objections. “But boys look at me for the wrong reason — when I’m at a party dancing, they look at me like this,” she said while making an uncomfortable face.
To cap-off the show, Ziegler invited Fallon to join her while she showed off some of the “bad” dance moves.
