The Queen of Disco is coming back to life on the Broadway stage thanks to Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, and viewers of Monday night’s (May 21) The Tonight Show got a preview of the theatrical tribute to Donna Summer. The “Three Donnas” who portray the dance music icon took the studio stage to perform the late diva’s No. 1 hit, “MacArthur Park.”
“Disco Donna,” portrayed by Ariana DeBose, opened the tune under the glow of a single spotlight with her sequined dress continuously catching the light. She belted out the introduction before the quintessential 1970s beat and instrumentals swelled, kicking off an electric rendition of the 1978 Summer standard written by Jimmy Webb in 1968.
By the song’s end, DeBose was joined by castmates Storm Lever and LaChanze — “Duckling Donna” and “Diva Donna,” respectively — for an infectious, harmonious finale, complete with a shower of confetti.
The bio-musical made its way to Broadway last month after debuting at La Jolla Playhouse last November. Watch the performance from Summer: The Donna Summer Musical below.
