The superstar revealed during her acceptance speech at the 2020 American Music Awards last month that she’s back in the studio re-recording songs from her pre-Lover albums — her 2006 self-titled debut, 2008’s Fearless, 2010’s Speak Now, 2012’s Red and 2014’s 1989 — after she couldn’t gain control over her master recordings. Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings purchased her former label Big Machine Label Group and therefore acquired Swift’s masters for just north of $300 million in June 2019. Ownership of her masters changed hands again 17 months later, when Ithaca sold them to Shamrock Holdings.
Swift slightly nodded to her 2014 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Shake It Off” at the end of her Twitter missive about the “exciting and creatively fulfilling” process of re-recording despite the shakeup, which could be an obvious follow-up to her “Love Story” re-recording. Upon reading her letter, fans took to Twitter to express how much they wanted to hear the now-30-year-old singer-songwriter’s take on “Long Live” and “Mean” from her 2010 album Speak Now.
