Season seven American Idol runner-up David Archuleta got the surprise of his life on Friday (March 5) when his car karaoke cover of Taylor Swift‘s “Love Story” resulted in an unexpected thumbs up from the superstar.
The whole unlikely journey began on Thursday (March 4) when Archuleta posted a mash-up cover of his 2008 debut single “Crush” with Swift’s iconic Fearless single.
The now-30-year-old Archuleta explained in a video that he got the idea from a Twitter follower, which segues into Swift’s anthem swelling up and David crooning his love-sick song over “Love Story” in shockingly perfect harmony in a 45-second pop tour de force.
Swift spotted the homage and just hours later tweeted back, “I LOVE THIS!!!” along with three starry-eyed emoji.
And so a potential real-life collaboration was born when David replied, “Thank you! I live in Nashville now if you want to get together and write!”
Since his self-titled debut dropped in 2008, Archuleta has released seven more albums, including last year’s Therapy Sessions, which the singer told Billboard was inspired by his own battles with self-worth and confidence. “When I first started [singing], all I knew was that I liked to sing, it made me feel good, and it made me feel understood,” Archuleta said. “I’ve realized I still feel more fulfilled when I connect to why I started singing in the first place. I can have peace, I can have fun, but I can be honest — and have the combination of all that, rather than just go after the catchiest, poppiest, trendiest thing. I just feel more relaxed, and back into who I am.”
