Rising pop duo Surfaces unveiled their new collaboration with Elton John, titled “Learn to Fly,” on Friday (June 12). They later dropped the official video on Wednesday (June 24).
On the twinkling single, recorded in quarantine and produced via Zoom, the band and the icon share an optimistic message in the midst of the havoc wreaked on the world by the global pandemic. “All the broken people, put your hands up high/ If you lift them up, you might just touch the sky/ All the lonely people, put your hands up high/ If you loosen up, you might just learn to fly/ Learn to fly,” vocalists Forrest Frank and Colin Padalecki croon on the track’s sunny chorus over piano by John, who also jumps in on the second verse.
“‘Learn To Fly’ is a song we started writing months ago right after putting the finishing touches on our third album Horizons,” Surfaces revealed in a statement. “After recording the demo, it was floating around and got into the hands of Elton who wanted to be a part of the track. After a series of Zoom studio sessions, we were able to record together from quarantine. Working with Elton felt like the idea of winning a Grammy. He was so passionate and driven and we couldn’t have wished for a more effortless collaboration. We hope this song will spread love in a time when the world could really use some and inspire people to open up their hearts.”
The new single follows Surfaces’ 2020 breakout hit “Sunday Best,” which currently sits at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 (chart dated June 12). Sir Elton, meanwhile, most recently joined forces with Lady Gaga for Chromatica album cut “Sine From Above.”
