Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Skyler Stonestreet is feeling more enriched with less on her new single “Bankrupt,” premiering exclusively today (April 26) via Billboard.
Stonestreet has already established herself as a songwriter on hits like Dua Lipa’s “IDGAF” and The Chainsmokers’ “Kanye,” but her latest solo endeavor brings her full skill set to the forefront. The Las Vegas native deftly builds the scene with precise details and direct provocations in the verses while clearly reveling in the art of letting go with the way she hangs on the first syllable of “bankrupt” in the song’s unhurried chorus.
“It’s about closure because you don’t have anything left to give,” Stonestreet tells Billboard. “You don’t have any more tears, feelings and even though it’s a difficult place to be in, it’s really positive because there is a sense of moving on and finally being done with it.”
The song hits with a particularly triumphant note following Stonestreet’s recently successful battle with breast cancer. Though framed through a turbulent relationship, the Scott Kelley-directed video embraces the liberating sensation of staring down a life-changing turning point.
“Breast cancer is just one piece of my life,” Skyler says. “It doesn’t define me. But now I want to help other people who are going through it, and I want girls to know that they should feel okay in their own skin.”
With another banger in the bank, it’s only a matter of time before Stonestreet starts cashing in.
