Shawn Mendes needs your help. He says so in the first line of his vulnerable new single, “In My Blood,” released on Thursday morning (March 22). Over a gentle acoustic guitar bed, Mendes pleads “Help me, it’s like the walls are caving in/ Sometimes I feel like giving up, but I just can’t/ It isn’t in my blood,” in a high, urgent voice.
One of Mendes’ most mature efforts to date, the track, quickly picks up the pace, as an insistent drum comes in, the pace picks up and Mendes’ vocals soar while he wails “it isn’t in my blood.” The singer, 19, is gearing up to release his third album — whose release date has not yet been announced — and has been teasing the song over the past week. “I know I’ve been pretty quiet during this album process and I just wanted to thank you with all of my heart for being there and supporting me the entire time,” Mendes wrote to fans on Wednesday (March 21).
“Blood” was co-produced by Mendes and Teddy Geiger and co-written by the two men alongside longtime collaborators Scott Harris and Geoff Warburton. The singer will debut the song live on The Late Late Show with James Corden next Wednesday (March 28). In the meantime, Mendheads are applauding him for the naked honesty he displays on the track, which includes lines such as “Laying on the bathroom floor, feeling nothing/ I’m overwhelmed and insecure, give me something/ I could take to ease my mind slowly/ Just have a drink and you’ll feel better/ Just take her home and you’ll feel better.”

Fans were immediately feeling the track, with one describing it on Twitter on Thursday morning as a “good reminder that no matter what age you are you can go through so many different emotions and struggles whether it’s a relationship or person and that it’s okay to think it might not get better without knowing it will.”
In my blood is a good reminder that no matter what age you are you can go through so many different emotions and struggles whether it’s a relationship or person and that it’s okay to think it might not get better without knowing that it will. Shawn expressed that so well.
