But while Mendes is a newbie to the Grammys, the 20-year-old is no stranger to awards show stages. Since his solo debut on the Radio Disney Music Awards in 2015, Mendes has delivered countless performances on awards shows of all kinds, and last year alone, he sang at five different ceremonies: ECHO Awards, Billboard Music Awards (twice!), MTV Video Music Awards, iHeartRadio Much Music Awards and the American Music Awards.
In celebration of perhaps Mendes’ biggest awards show performances yet — especially thanks to his two Grammy nominations for song of the year (“In My Blood”) and best pop vocal album (Shawn Mendes) — revisit all his appearances since last year’s Grammys below.
ECHO Awards, April 2018 — “In My Blood”
Though there’s not a video of the full performance available, this short 20-second clip shows that it was one of Mendes’ simpler performances of his dynamic single. He stood in the center of a circular stage as lights flashed around him, which put the sole focus on his powerful vocals and passion for the song’s vulnerable lyrics.

Billboard Music Awards, May 2018 — “In My Blood” and “Youth” (feat. Khalid)
As “In My Blood” was rising on the charts, Mendes took the BBMAs as an opportunity to both promote his single and also send a message. First, he delivered an empassioned rendtion of “In My Blood” while standing among a sea of glowing flowers. About an hour later, he teamed up with Khalid for their moving collaboration “Youth” to deliver an affecting performance of the song — one that became even more meaningful when they were joined by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Choir, just three months after the tragic shooting at the Parkland, Fla., school.
MTV Video Music Awards, August 2018 — “In My Blood”
Continuing to find ways to mix up “In My Blood” performances, Mendes turned his VMAs appearance into a wet T-shirt party. OK, not quite, but he sported a white muscle tank that got soaked when rain came pouring down over the stage after the song’s final bridge. While there were likely plenty of squealing fans dying over Mendes’ doused look, the thunderstorm aesthetic was a pretty epic way to bring new life to the song.
iHeartRadio Much Music Awards, August 2018 — “Lost In Japan” and “In My Blood”
Just one week after the VMAs, Mendes once again performed “In My Blood” to close out the MMVAs. Fans clearly weren’t tired of him or the song just yet, as the performance sparked the loudest crowd response of them all — likely because it was a hometown show for the Toronto native. It was a huge night for Mendes all around, as he also opened the show with his then-new single “Lost in Japan” and even took home the biggest award of the night, artist of the year.
American Music Awards, October 2018 — “Lost in Japan” (feat. Zedd)
Hardly two weeks after Zedd gave “Lost In Japan” a club-ready twist, he took the stage with Mendes to perform the remix. The performance was visually mesmerizing thanks to the blinking pink lights floating above them; but Zedd’s impressive piano playing, a live brass section and Mendes’ smooth vocals — especially his final falsetto note — all made for quite the lovely delivery. It’s unclear what song Shawn will play at the 2019 Grammys, but fans certainly wouldn’t mind round two of the “Lost In Japan” remix.
