The first full week of November started out with two huge debuts from Selena Gomez and Kanye West. Gomez scored her first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper with her latest single, “Lose You to Love Me,” and West notched his record-tying ninth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Jesus Is King.
The week was also exciting for Harry Styles fans, as the “Lights Up” singer revealed when his next album will arrive. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga‘s Little Monsters were gifted a new interview with the superstar in which she addressed those Bradley Cooper dating rumors.
In between, Billboard hosted this year’s Live Music Summit & Awards in Los Angeles, with P!nk receiving the Legend of Live + Tour of the Year award and delivering a sincere speech on Tuesday (Nov. 5).
Check out some of the highlights from this week below.
Selena Gomez hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 for the first time
Selena Gomez’s sophomore album is starting off on a successful note: Her first single from her next LP, “Lose You to Love Me,” debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100. The song marks Gomez’s first Hot 100 leader, which naturally made Selenators around the world — along with Sel’s “LYTLM” co-writers — rejoice. Gomez herself took to Instagram to thank fans for their support, writing, “This song has my whole heart.”
Kanye West landed his ninth No. 1 on the Billboard 200
Kanye may think Jesus Is King, but Yeezy is king of several charts this week thanks to his ninth album. Jesus Is King debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking a record-tying feat of nine chart-toppers in a row, but also ruled the Top Christian Albums and Top Gospel Albums charts; the album also made history on the Hot Christian Songs and Hot Gospel Songs charts, as all 11 tracks landed (and occupied the top 10) on both charts.
Harry Styles announced his sophomore album
Styles got fans riled up with the sultry new single (and video) “Lights Up” that he surprise-dropped last month. But he revealed on Monday (Nov. 4) that his album won’t be a surprise: Fine Line arrives Dec. 13. Naturally the news sent fans into a frenzy on social media, with one fan declaring “Harry Styles now owns the whole month of December.” Styles took the excitement to another level the next day, too, announcing that he’ll be celebrating the album with a show at Los Angeles’ Forum the night of its release.
Panic! at the Disco went “full on Elsa”
If you thought Frozen couldn’t get anymore belt-tastic than “Let It Go,” Panic! At the Disco served up a new Frozen 2 track that gives Elsa a run for her money. On Monday, the band released their version of “Into the Unknown,” a bombastic tune that soundtracks Elsa’s latest struggle with how to save her kingdom of Arendelle — and yes, frontman Brendon Urie’s vocals are insane (in the best way). “Going full on Elsa for the P!ATD version of ‘Into The Unknown,'” Panic tweeted with a link to the song.
Datsik broke his silence
The electronic producer has been on hiatus for the past 18 months in the wake of sexual assault allegations made on social media in March 2018, but took to Facebook on Tuesday (Nov. 7) with a seven-minute video that addresses his break. Though he did not directly acknowledge nor offer an apology to his accusers, Datsik said he’s been doing some “soul searching” and opened up about his battles with anxiety and depression. He also hinted that he’ll be sharing some “exciting plans” soon.
Queen Latifah slayed as Ursula on Little Mermaid Live
While everyone cast in the live TV musical version of Little Mermaid was incredible — from Moana star Auli?i Cravalho as Ariel to John Stamos’ hilarious cameo as the crab-crazed chef — Queen Latifah’s Ursula was clearly the winner according to social media. See the best reactions to Little Mermaid Live here and our favorite moments from the show here.
Trent Reznor opened up about “Old Town Road,” Ashley O and more
The Nine Inch Nails frontman has had an unexpectedly ubiquitous 2019 thanks to interpolations of NIN tracks by 5 Seconds of Summer, Miley Cyrus’ Black Mirror character Ashley O and Lil Nas X on the year’s biggest hit, “Old Town Road.” He’s done a lot for himself as well, teaming up with NIN bandmate Atticus Ross to score Netflix’s Bird Box, A24’s Waves, and a three-album set for HBO’s Watchmen. On top of all of that, Nine Inch Nails received their third nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October. He talked about all of that with Billboard, and yep, it’s as awesome (and candid) as you’d expect.
The American Music Awards are going to be dominated by powerhouse ladies this year, as Camila Cabello, Lizzo and Dua Lipa were all added to the roster of performers on Wednesday (Nov. 6). The hitmakers join previously announced performers Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift, the latter of whom will be honored with the Artist of the Decade award. The AMAs will air live from the Microsoft Theater in L.A. at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
Lady Gaga set the record straight on those Bradley Cooper dating rumors
How do you make a Lady Gaga interview even cooler? Have Oprah ask the questions. That’s exactly what Elle did for its December cover story, which was released on Wednesday. The pair covered several facets of Gaga’s career — including her infamous meat dress from the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards — but arguably what her Little Monsters latched onto most was her commentary about A Star Is Born costar Bradley Cooper. “We made a love story… Of course we wanted people to believe that we were in love,” Gaga told Oprah. Check out what else she had to say here.
BTS broke yet another record
Another week, another BTS record. This week marked the K-pop phenoms’ Love Yourself: Answer 52nd (non-consecutive) week on the Billboard 200, which makes BTS the first K-pop group to spend a full year on the all-genre chart. Even more impressive? The album is now eligible for platinum certification, earning 1.1 million total equivalent album units since its August 2018 release, according to Nielsen Music.
Pink accepted Billboard’s Legend of Live award
Billboard’s Live Music Summit saw several interesting discussions over its two days on Nov. 5 and 6, including an honest conversation with Woodstock founder Michael Lang about this year’s failed Woodstock 50 festival (“it was a bad fit from the beginning,” he admitted) and Deadmau5 chatted about Cube V3. But the star of the show was Legend of Live + Tour of the Year recipient — and recent Billboard cover star — P!nk, who delivered a heartfelt speech thanking her longtime manager Roger Davies.
Grace Vanderwaal was tested on her New Girl fandom
The teenage star is apparently the biggest fan of the Fox sitcom New Girl, so Billboard decided to test her knowledge with a little help from the New Girl herself, Zooey Deschanel. The actress, who played the lead role of Jess Day, sat down with VanderWaal for the latest installment of Quizzed, in which the singer — sporting the glasses and sparkly tiny hat that Jess wore on the show — proved that she really is a New Girl superfan by impressively answering questions like “What did Jess dress up as for Nick’s dad’s funeral?” and identifying quotes like “I’ve got two perfectly good forks at the end of my arms.”
Following a girl-powered New Music Friday last week, Nov. 8 saw several male artists released new tunes. Luke Combs unveiled his sophomore album What You See Is What You Get, The Chainsmokers dropped a downtempo dance track, and the Jonas Brothers brought the holiday spirit with “Like It’s Christmas.” But there were still plenty of women represented on Friday, particularly thanks to collabs from Karol G and Nicki Minaj as well as Meghan Trainor with Lennon Stella and Sasha Sloan. We run down all of the biggest releases in this week’s First Stream — check it out here!
