Selena Gomez was not expecting to achieve her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 while she was recording and filming the music video for “Lose You to Love Me.” On Monday, Gomez not only notched the top spot, but also took fans behind her personal growth that led to the song’s innate vulnerability.
Video director Sophia Mueller — who’s also repsonsible for Gomez’s futuristic and colorful “Look at Her Now” music video — captures the pop star all on an iPhone 11 Pro perched on a tripod. A new three-minute behind-the-scenes clip takes fans around the “Lose You to Love Me” video’s Sylmar, Calif., set in the same black-and-white filter as the visual itself, seizing a raw image of the pop star as she unwinds her intertwined musical and personal journeys.
“I actually worked with Sophie on ‘Good for You,’ and it was funny because we were talking about how different I was then as opposed to how I am now,” Gomez confessed in the clip. “Without giving too much away, I think she just knows where I was and the journey I walked through, so to actually have her do this video is pretty cool.”
Gomez continued of Mueller: “She’s able to capture different emotions, and she’s challenging me to show the side of me that was happy for a while, the side of me that was sad and confused and made me tap into all of these different characters, if you will.”
Gomez also showed appreciation for her background female ensemble working on the music video or showing up to support because they make her feel “super comfortable,” including one of her longtime best friends, Courtney Lopez, who shared a BTS shot last month declaring how Selena “rises and rises and rises in strength every single time.”
“The song is pretty self-explanatory,” the “Lose You to Love Me” songstress explained. “I love, love, love and I’m very, very, very proud of this song.”
