When asked about a recent moment caught on camera and posted to Instagram where Bieber serenaded Gomez with “My Girl” before the American Music Awards, the 23-year-old chanteuse told Rolling Stone she was totally over discussing her ex.
“Well, I am sorry, first of all,” she said. “And honestly, what I would love to be printed is that I am so beyond done with talking about that, and him.”
Gomez’s reaction is understandable for an artist looking to be taken seriously, rather than pegged to a relationship with one of the world’s largest pop stars.
When asked whether it made going on the American Music Awards any harder, she replied it didn’t.
“I don’t alter my life because of what people are going to talk about,” she said. “If I go and have a great time, I live my life and nothing is going to dictate how I feel unless I let it.”
Of course it’s hard to detach songs such as the Revival single “Same Old Love” from Gomez’s relationship with Bieber — a point she understands. But as frustrating as that may be sometimes, she said she doesn’t regret a thing.
“It’s a song about a cycle, a cycle that people understand,” she said. “It drives you mad, but it’s beautiful. People have seen most of the choices that I’ve made in my life. And I love every choice that I’ve made. Because now I understand how to apply that to my music. This is who I am. I’m glad my life was never perfect.”
