In light of the recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia, Selena Gomez made a clear political message last weekend in Los Angeles with a choker that read “We the People.”
As subtle as Gomez’s necklace is, the message is as clear as it gets: American citizens need to unite against the bigoted rhetoric of the Charlottesville rallies. The necklace by Slow Factory is still selling on the company’s website for $75, with 10 percent of all proceeds going to the ACLU.
In an interview with Glamour, Celine Semaan, the jewelry line’s designer and a Lebanese immigrant, revealed that her immigration lawyer warned her not to travel after President Trump’s travel ban was announced.
His ban served as an inspiration for Semaan’s politically infused jewelry.
Since Gomez’s appearance in the necklace, business has boomed for Semaan’s line. “It [has been] crazy — we got lots of orders, which means lots of donations to the ACLU,” the designer said. “When we cast a wider net, we really impact more people and create a positive change.”
This isn’t the first time Gomez’s clothing has contained powerful messages. At the 2017 Met Gala, the “Bad Liar” singer debuted the bag that she made in collaboration with Coach, that reads “Love Yourself First” on the bottom.
