March 30 was a big night for Selena Gomez, as her executive-produced series 13 Reasons Why premiered on Netflix following months of promo and anticipation.
After attending the Los Angeles premiere Thursday — where she admitted that she “got a little controlling” in her role as EP — Gomez took to Instagram to give a shout-out to all the people who made the project happen. “I couldn’t be more overwhelmed with pride and joy,” she captioned a shot of herself on set with other crew members.
13 Reasons Why is based on the popular young adult book by Jay Asher (published in 2007), which holds a special place in Gomez’s heart. “After 7 years of holding onto this book, I couldn’t of picked a better time for this message to exist. Jay Asher wrote a beautifully tragic, compelling story and we were lucky to have brought it to life,” she added in her post. “Thank you to every single soul that put their heart into this passion project.”
Ahead of the show’s Netflix release, Gomez revealed on Twitter that along with executive producing, she also provided a song for the soundtrack. The track, a haunting cover of “Only You” from ’80s synthpop duo Yazoo, is inspired by the story between the main characters Hannah and Clay. Listen to the full song below.
