Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week Billboard taps chart-topping artists and taste-makers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard’s Spotify account. We give the artists free reign to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
This week, YouTube star Sam Tsui created an upbeat playlist which features catchy pop hits that helped influence his most recent single, “Impatience.” “‘Impatience’ is a track that’s all about tension, anticipation, and the explosive energy of wanting something in a really visceral way,” Tsui tells Billboard. “I was able to work with and co-produce the track with the incredible Peter Thomas, and the result is a really bright, throwback/synthy vibe that I absolutely love — and one that represents the direction much of the music I’ve got in the works.”
Tsui curated a playlist for Billboard featuring funky pop hits, like Carly Rae Jepsen’s synthy track “The One” and the dancey pop tune “I Know a Place” by MUNA, which Tsui says has the energy and atmosphere he was going for with “Impatience.” The playlist also features “Be Mean” by DNCE, who Tsui opened for last year. “I’m obsessed with how much fun all of their tracks are,” Tsui says of the Joe Jonas-fronted band. “[I] was absolutely blown away by their show.”
Tsui, who rose to fame by posting elaborate pop covers on YouTube, is currently finishing up his upcoming album. “For this playlist, I wanted to include a few of my favorite 80’s jams to which I attribute my love of epic melodies and funky syncopation — but also the new stuff I’m listening to now that’s really influenced my production and writing.”
According to Tsui, his new album will be bright, earnest, and rhythmic. “I think this playlist will give fans a window into what I’m listening to while I finish it up!” You can check out Tsui’s playlist and his official video for “Impatience” below.
