Sam Smith has made his triumphant return to music, and tonight (Oct. 7) he makes his triumphant return to Saturday Night Live for the first time in three years.
Just one day before taking the SNL stage, the 25-year-old singer announced that his much-anticipated sophomore album, The Thrill Of It All, is just less than a month away (due Nov. 3). And with dates for a full-on 2018 tour also revealed on Oct. 6, Smith has fans on the edge of their seats eagerly awaiting what he has in store both on record and on stage.
Here are five things we’d love to see from Smith’s second SNL performance.
A choir for “Too Good at Goodbyes”
Smith has performed his lead The Thrill Of It All single a handful of times now, so we already know the SNL rendition is going to be incredible. But while his trusty backup singers have provided a beautiful chorus-like melody on the song’s chorus in all of the “Too Good at Goodbyes” performances Smith has given, hearing a full choir take on Smith’s sing-along track would take the song to an even more anthemic level. When you’re on national television, you might as well do it as big as possible, right?
Another new song
Though there’s only time for two songs on SNL and Smith has unveiled two songs from The Thrill Of It All (and the second song to be released, “Pray,” is another amazing tune), his SNL appearance would be even more exciting if he premiered another song from the album instead of singing both of the ones we’ve already heard. Call it greedy, but we just like to think of it as overeager.
Playing Superman in a skit with Gal Gadot
?Okay, this may be the biggest stretch of any hopes for this SNL episode, but when the host is Wonder Woman, we can’t help hoping that some sort of superhero would show up. Something tells us Smith would get a thrill out of dressing up like Superman, Batman, The Flash or Green Lantern… maybe all of the above?
A little dancing
During Smith’s 2014 SNL appearance, he was still a relatively shy singer who was always sharply dressed in a suit. Of course, he completely crushed his vocals on “Stay With Me” and “Lay Me Down,” but he remained pretty stationary performance. Judging by Smith’s recent Live Lounge performance, he’s become much more interactive while singing, and he just seems to be more comfortable as a performer — so let’s see a little booty shakin’ this time around, Mr. Smith!
The flashiest Sam Smith outfit yet
Smith has transformed his dapper suit-wearing image to a more casual persona with an eclectic wardrobe, sporting some fun patterns and stylishly retro shirts as of late. He may want to dress up a little for a national television appearance, but if he is going to go with a suit, we hope it reflects his funky 2017 style.
