More than a month after first performing a moving cover of Coldplay‘s “Fix You” as part of the iHeartRadio Living Room Series back in May, Sam Smith released their version of the song on Sunday (July 5). “Thank you @Coldplay for writing such a beautiful song,” Smith wrote alongside a brief clip of the emotional, stripped-down performance.
“I love this song, and as soon as I heard it I was just reminded again of how much of a classic it is,” Smith said of the cover before its debut performance. “I’ve never actually seen Chris Martin perform this live, but I really want to, because I’ve fallen in love with this song after singing it.” Smith recalled that the months of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic had found them at home, where they “really weirdly fallen in love with singing again. I’ve been singing so many different songs, songs that aren’t my own.”
Smith, who said they didn’t get tested but felt they’d “100 percent” had the coronavirus, released a collab with Demi Lovato, “I’m Ready,” in May, after announcing in March that their third album, originally entitled To Die For, would be pushed back from its original May 1 release date because the title “doesn’t feel right… I have to come to the decision to continue working on the album and make some important changes and additions. I will be renaming the album and pushing back the release date — both of which are to be confirmed at this time.”
The as-yet-untitled album is has not yet been rescheduled, though Smith said it is still due this year.
