Sam Smith has seen first-hand the devastating effect that war can have on families and children and in a touching new video he’s encouraging his fans to lend a hand during this holiday season of giving. “To my wonderful fans, I am so excited to announce that I have become a global ambassador for the incredible humanitarian group @WarChildUK,” Smith wrote in an early morning tweet on Monday (Dec. 4) featuring pictures of him with two of the children he’s met during his trips this year with the charitable group to Iraq and Jordan.

Smith said he was honored to be part of the incredible WarChild team and is “truly excited” to help them raise as much money and awareness as possible, urging his fans to donate to the group’s winter appeal. “I’m here in Amman as an ambassador of WarChild,” Smith says in a video chronicling his journey. “If what had happened to these kids had happened to me as a kid I know for a fact I would be angry,” he says.
Despite the grim conditions, Smith says that when he visited the Jordanian camp what he found was something “really positive” going on with the WarChild team spreading love and compassion. “It was just amazing to me,” he says. “The things that I have seen ignites a fire in me… Please, please, please help.”
