Are Sam Smith and boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel no longer an item? The U.K. singer-songwriter has hinted at the breakup on Instagram and in concert over the past 48 hours, and although Smith has not explicitly confirmed the split with Zeizel, whom he started publicly dating earlier this month, it appears that the “Stay With Me” crooner is single.
On Tuesday (Jan. 20), Smith posted a photo of himself sporting an exaggerated pout and a glass of wine in his hand. The caption read, “Sometimes you just need to lay in bed with a glass of red wine and a football T shirt and listen to Joni Mitchell. It’s been a sad day. Beautiful show, but sad day x.”
Also on Tuesday night, Smith introduced his song “Like I Can” during a concert in Toronto by telling his audience, “This song is very special for me today. It’s because I’ve actually had to do a very similar thing today with someone I’ve been seeing.” “Like I Can,” from Smith’s debut album In The Lonely Hour, finds Smith trying to convince his wayward partner that “They’ll never love you like I can.”
More Instagram posts hinted at the split: Smith posted a photo of himself performing with the caption, “I’m an old romantic, that’s what they say to me.” A rep for Smith did not return request for comment on the matter.
On the bright side, Smith is nominated for six Grammys this year, including album of the year for In The Lonely Hour and best new artist. Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the U.K. crooner will perform at the Feb. 8 ceremony.
