It all started with hip flask of tequila. Then Sam Smith managed to make not one, but two gaffes at the 88th Academy Awards, where he won best original song for the James Bond-Spectre theme “Writing’s on the Wall.”
At least that’s what the “Too Good at Goodbyes” crooner told Ellen DeGeneres during his visit on The Ellen Show on Tuesday (Oct. 24).
Smith misquoted Ian McKellan during his acceptance speech, claiming the Lord of the Rings actor once said no openly gay man had previously won an Oscar (he had actually said no openly gay actor had won a best actor Oscar). Then a reporter informed Smith that Howard Ashman, an openly gay man, had previously won best original Song. Smith responded, “I should know him. We should date.” But Ashman had passed away from complications with AIDs in 1991.
“I wasn’t happy with my performance and we thought we had no chance of winning at all. I was just like, ‘Let’s get the party started and have some fun,’” he told DeGeneres. “Then we won and I was just like, ‘Woah.’ And I went up and I mucked up my speech. I forgot to say best male actor. I basically said I was the first gay person to ever win an Oscar.”
He put his hand over his face in shame and laughed it off. Then he revealed, “I saw Elton John at an after party and he was like, ‘I’ve won an Oscar.’ I was like, ‘I’m sorry. I was young when you won your Oscar.’ I’m joking.”
DeGeneres later changed the subject to Smith’s love life, which has been the subject of much speculation after he was spotted kissing 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn.
Naturally, the comedian asked him if he was no longer single. “No, I’m not, which is crazy,” he said. “It’s weird bringing out an album and not being single. Because when I brought out In the Lonely Hour, I was so lonely. But now I’m singing songs about another guy, but now I’m quite happy. So it’s quite weird.”
Then DeGeneres followed up, asking about the subject of his heartbreak songs. “There’s only like four or five songs about him on this,” Smith said with a laugh. “The rest are about other people.”
